Painters can often get frustrated trying to apply the rules of linear perspective to observational paintings. In this class will we develop observational skills that help us have correct perspective without the complexity of rules. We will do several studies where observation overrides the need for setting up vanishing points and rulers.

Painting is important. It is fundamental form of expression and and those who engage in this activity must answer certain questions: why should I paint? What should I paint? How do I conjure a painting from my inner vision and outer perceptions? The emphasis of the class will be on oil painting but those who wish to work in acrylic or another medium will learn the same fundamentals of creating a painting. You will paint on a prepared canvas from visual source material. This source material will be provided or you may bring your own, typically a drawing or photograph. You will be shown how to take this and create a poetic, three dimensional composition on the two dimensional surface of the canvas. It will be demonstrated how to prep a canvas, how to transfer a composition to canvas and how to realize this image in paint. You will gain an understanding of colors and their relationships to each other, how to use color to create space and use groupings of color as visual chords playing against other visual chords. The end result will be a painting that is a living breathing organism. Materials list pending registration. Canvas included.
**Mentoring option available for this class: bring your own projects and receive feedback and guidance as you work.

What a person wears tells a story. From the choice of specific attire, colors,
accessories and fabrics, to the way in which someone inhabits their clothes
(comfortably, stiffly, self-consciously…), we find clues that chronicle the nature of
the person in front of us, both on the superficial societal level and on the deeper
psychological level. In this workshop we’ll be working on one long pose with an
elegantly dressed model (with a twist!) to find/create their story.
You’ll begin the workshop on Friday afternoon with some thumbnail sketches of
our model, using a viewfinder to help find the perfect composition for your
painting. Once your individual composition is decided, you’ll begin a monotone
block-in. At this stage there will be an emphasis on the use of value shapes and
relationships to find accurate proportions as well as to give life to the overall form
of our model. You’ll continue our work with a full-color palette for the rest of the
workshop, exploring how to describe the luminosity of living flesh and the
sumptuousness of the fabrics our model is wearing by using warm-cool color
relationships and a combination of opaque and transparent hues. Instruction will
include class demonstrations and individual hands-on guidance.
This workshop is designed for painters of all levels.
