This is a very in depth and step by step video series where we focus on creating a realistic and accurate figure drawing in charcoals.  We will spend extensive time on the process of measuring to create a strong foundation upon which to begin our values and realism of form. The image above is the project students will draw throughout the course.

Students will learn:

  • Comparative measuring for accurate proportions
  • How to manipulate charcoals for optimal value transitions
  • How shadow shapes work to help keep proper proportion
  • How to construct a figure drawing from a photograph in a comparative way to life drawing
  • Tools of the trade and their value
  • Why photos can be an aid to learning how to draw
  • How to correct measurement errors and not have to "start over or give up"
  • Easy tips and tricks
  • and much more!

In this course, students gain essential knowledge on representational figure drawing techniques by training the eye to see with particular focus on proper measuring.  We work slowly and all steps of the process are vocalized in video so that the student can understand what is happening in the mind of the artist instructor, what questions need to be asked when working on this drawing and the steps of the thought progress that follows in an organized fashion for a realistic and proportioned result.  This method used in drawing "Dominique" is founded on classical academic figure drawing principles.

Great course for anyone wanting to improve their proportions and values to achieve quality realism in figure drawing.  Step by Step videos included for all lessons.  This class is 12 weeks long, however, we meet every other week for critique reviews and Q & A for a total of 6 Zoom calls.  Due to the intricate and focused manner of this project, we expect the lessons to take more than a week and thus offer extra time in which to do it.  The instructor is available the entire 12 week class duration to guide students as needed via email or text.

*students may work with graphite but charcoal is recommended and it is the medium used in our instructional videos but those allergic or not fond of charcoal, this class can be adapted to graphite. Let us know in advance if this is your preference so we may modify some instructions.
