Learn the basics of still life pastel painting.  We will go over how to draw the pears in correct proportion to each other, how to determine colors needed and how to create values to create the realism artists tend to seek in representational art.  This course includes a supplemental demo video (right) students can watch later (about 2 hrs in full length) and follow along with to finish their piece as our class will be primarily a "first-run practice" - and that may be good enough but the extra out of class time will uplevel the results.  While students run through the drawing and application of pastels in our online classroom, they will have their "2nd lesson", the video, to act as a refresher and a step-by-step process to create a lovely still life pastel painting on their own time and pace.  The instructor will be available for quick guidance post class via email to ensure students get the results they seek.  All ages and levels welcome.

Most art students will watch an art demonstration but when it comes to actually doing it all on their own, their brain freezes and they don't remember the steps or how to do them!  Identify?  Then this course is perfect for you!  Through real-time step by step instruction, students will be introduced to an easy method for creating a realistic 3/4 portrait. Students will learn comparative measuring and shape-seeing to create a good representational drawing and the portrait in this demo will be what students will work on. Beginners to intermediate levels welcome, ages 12 & up.  This course includes video instruction + real-time instruction with the expectation that most of the art making will be done on the student's own time and pace while in class we go over step by step what is needed to be done over the next week on their own.  Instructor provides weekly critiques to all students.

This class is designed to train the student to see and render accurately the 19th-century Bargue plate(s) used in the French Academy until the early 20th century. Students will improve observational skills and learn to simplify complex visual information by breaking down the parts into small and large forms and shadows and light.  A step by step process anyone can learn.  Ultimately the course was designed by Charles Bargue to prepare students for drawing realistically from life, peaking with figure painting.  Beginner artists and committed teens 13 & over welcome.

Artists can often get frustrated trying to apply the rules of linear perspective to observational drawings and paintings. In this class will we develop observational skills that help us have correct perspective without the complexity of rules. We will do several studies where observation overrides the need for setting up vanishing points and rulers. Participants are welcome to draw or paint.

Paul graduated Ringling College of Art and Design with a BFA in Illustration. After graduating he was hired by Paul Montgomery Studio, a decorative art firm where he designed and executed a wide variety of decorative arts projects for the commercial and private clients. His landscape, sky, and trompe l'oiel murals; hand painted Italian ornamental designs; and 18th century design motif reproductions adorn hotels, restaurants and homes internationally. In 1992 Paul left the firm to start Paul Scibilia Studios where he continues his career as a painter and decorative artist. In 2001, his love of the techniques and style of the Renaissance painters inspired him to create a painting class at Anna Maria Art League on Anna Maria Island, Fl. The course title was  "Old Masters Methodology Painting". This expanded to several other art leagues in the Sarasota/Bradenton, Fl area. Now living in Savannah, Ga., Paul has continued his decorative art business. He teaches his "Old Masters Methodology Painting" course at the studio school.

with Paul Scibilia

 March 22-29, 2018 (8 days)
Thursday thru Wednesday
10am-5pm, one hour lunch

Cost: $495, includes custom panel and palette.

We will run this course again in the summer.  Details coming soon.  Email us if you're interested.

This 8 day workshop is based on passages written by Leonardo da Vinci in his notebooks on the technical principals of painting. The student will be guided from the initial drawing stages, through the grey-scale "Verdaccio" under painting, and finally into the mixing of a four-color full value palette. Every color needed in the painting can be created using a combination of the four colors. These will be applied in very thin transparent layers that allow all the modeling in the under-painting to come through. Through this approach the student will gain a greater ability to see the subject, learn the meaning of the related artistic terminology and language, gain the ability to see color as value; and gain insight into the historical significance of this incredible process.

Students will learn how paint the landscape in oil in the studio. A studio environment provides an opportunity for the artist to approach a landscape painting differently than when painting in the field. Working from reference material including photographs and field studies, students will learn how to use reference material to create an oil painting that begins with a strong composition and ultimately creates a sense of light, emotion and drama. We will work through design and composition, value and color studies, and the use of a monochromatic underpainting ultimately leading up to the finished studio painting.  We will also discuss the strengths and limitations of photography when painting the landscape in the studio as well as the use of photo editing software. Depending on the skill level of the student and desire for working outside of class, more than one studio painting may be completed over the 7 weeks.

Week 1 – Reference Sources/Design and composition/ Week 2 – Notan, value and color studies in oil / Week 3 – Monochromatic underpainting / Week 4 – Blocking in the large masses with color / Week 5 and Week 6 – Adding detail / Week 7 – Finish and critique
